Weakened and Loss of Muscle Strength
Many people who suffer from malnutrition experience muscle atrophy, which can be described as the wasting away of muscles. Limbs begin to appear smaller and many have experienced the inability to move their limb due to muscle atrophy. Also, the body will have difficulty maintaining a normal body temperature as a result of having less muscle and tissue mass.
Decreased Mobility, Stamina, and Energy
Decreased mobility and stamina is a result of muscle wasting, which often becomes apparent through malnutrition. Loss of mobility is common among malnourished elderly. A lack of energy, fatigue, increased tiredness, and anemia can also be induced from malnutrition.
Weakened Immune System
A common effect of malnutrition is a weakened and slower immune system. This increases susceptibility to infections, viruses, and illnesses such as scurvy. A weakened immune response will delay and prolong the healing of wounds and cuts. Additionally, many will experience breathing problems, and skin, nails, and hair will become dry, flaky, dull, and appear 'lifeless'. Marasmus, a sever protein-energy deficiency, can also develop from malnutrition. The effects of Marasmus include severe weight loss, thin and weak skin, pinched facial expressions, and apathy.
